Harvesting the Crops

Workers harvesting MacadamiaCommunity Commitment

We are dedicated to working with our own community to improve the quality of life here, as well as to promote individual responsibility and achievement. By employing local men and women we support community development and provide opportunities for acquiring new skills.

Through the tourism project we are able to work more with local women in harvesting and preparing locally-grown food for our meals, which allows them to use their knowledge to receive economic benefits for their own families.   We believe that education will strengthen our community and will greatly increase the opportunities for our children. In the elementary school located just down the road we have provided science and environmental science classes and are currently working to finance a school band. With the help of our guests and student groups that come to visit, we have helped to fund the school computer center and will be providing each classroom with a small library.

Women processing Macadamia at the FLA PlantThrough a new partnership with the University of Costa Rica we are creating a youth-focused science program that will create research opportunities for local youth and student groups that come visit us from the United States. This outreach program will provide a space for cultural exchange, promote youth leadership, and expand the opportunities for our local youth to pursue careers in science.

We are fully committed to working in this small community through both our farming work, tourism project, and research opportunities.
