Our Mission

The Mission of Finca La Anita is to preserve tropical rainforests through expanding awareness of the importance of protecting this amazing ecosystem. We are working to support local rainforest communities, provide opportunities for scientific research, enhance our guests’ experience though ecotourism and find benefactors to aid us in our preservation efforts.

Traditionally in this remote area, most families in the village of Colonia Libertad would cut one or two acres of forest every dry season to plant beans and corn to provide subsistence for their family for the following year. Since this process of clear-cutting left the soil exposed, the heavy rains washed all of the nutrients from the soils and farmers had to clear new land to plant year after year. This process consumed hundreds of acres of rain forest every year. By providing alternative employment here on the ranch, where we planted our macadamia crop on previously cleared land, people in the community no longer have to cut down the rainforest to provide for their families.

Finca La Anita seeks to provide a stable local economy ensuring that small community economies no longer rely on destructive agricultural practices for subsistence. We are committed to supporting the local community in many ways - by employing local people to work in our orchards and in the tourism project, helping members of the community start their own small businesses and microenterprises, and working to improve the quality of education for all of the children in our local schools.

Another important part of our work has been educating people about the importance of rainforest preservation. We have partnered with scientists from national and international universities to conduct cutting-edge research on our farm. We are currently establishing partnerships with high schools in Costa Rica and the United States to provide research and cultural exchange opportunities here at La Anita Rainforest Ranch. We confirm our commitment to rainforest preservation by donating 1 square meter of rainforest for each box of macadamia and bag of coffee we sell.
